The thalamus is formed by two ovoid of 3 cm long and about 1.5 cm thick, which sits in depth of each brain hemisphere. The third ventricle separates each thalamus, although they remain attached by a bridge of tissue called thalamic intermediate mass, which extends between them. The thalami are masses of gray matter, so bodies containing numerous neuronal and synaptic connections. From a functional standpoint, the thalamus is a sensory relay station. Nerve impulses do thalamic level scale, establishing synapses before continuing their journey to the cerebral cortex. The thalamus is also a primitive sensory center which can record a type of generalized and vague feeling. The hypothalamus is located, as its name suggests, below the thalamus. Presents a variety of functions, some of them quite unusual. For example, produces at least two hormones (oxytocin and vasopressin) and contains centers that regulate the activity of the anterior pituitary, the autonomic nervous system, body temperature and food and water intake. In addition, the hypothalamus is associated with wakefulness and emotional sensitivity. In laboratory animals, like the cat, the release of the inhibitory influence exerted on the cerebral cortex hypothalamus causes the appearance of outbreaks of violence at the slightest provocation. The subthalamus is in front of the thalamus and hypothalamus beside its function relates main body movement. Neuronal pathways that traverse range to the thalamus, cerebellum, and basal ganglia. the epithalamus stands at the rear of the diencephalon, mesencephalon beside. It is made by the pineal gland or epifisi and nuclei of the habenula. The epifisi is an endocrine gland that secretes the hormone melatonin, this secretion is related to the existing amount of sunlight, more light will segregate more. the habenula serves to facilitate communication between the limbic system and the reticular formation.

The diencephalon is a structure located at the inside center of the cerebral hemispheres. It lies between the hemispheres and the brain stem, and through him to spend most of fibers that go to the cerebral cortex. The diencephalon is composed of several parts: thalamus, hypothalamus, subthalamus and epithalamus .
